Commissioning a Portrait

Commissioning a portrait is a collaborative process between artist and client that can be a fun and inspiring experience. I love getting to know my clients, hearing their stories, and creating a work of art that they and their families can enjoy for years to come.

In our initial conversation we will discuss the kind of portrait you are seeking. Though I will occasionally work from client’s photographs, I generally prefer to use live sittings or my own digital photographs.  We will go over the choice of either a painting or a drawing, my process and prices and I can answer any questions you may have. Together we will set a mutually agreeable schedule and the work will begin.

Whenever possible we will start with a meeting in my studio of 1 to 2 hours. During that session, I will set the pose, take reference photos and I may make a few quick sketches. After the sitting, I will go through all the photos, notes, and sketches to come up with composition and, either through e-mail or in person, we will collaborate on the final reference to be used.

I will then begin the painting in my studio and may ask for a second or third sitting as needed to truly capture the essence of the subject. I guarantee a true likeness in a style consistent with my portfolio/website. The highest-grade professional materials are used for all work.

Prices start at $1,800. Please contact me for details at augustburnsvt@gmail.com or by phone at 802-272-5051.
